Javelin Fish are an inshore fish from the northern half of Australia
How To Identify: 
Javelin Fish are often mistaken for a Bream by amateur fisherman however they have a square cut tail whereas Bream have a forked tail. Javelin Fish make a Grunting sound when caught, hence its other name Grunter. Javelin Fish are silver colour. The name Javelin Fish comes from the sharp spine on its anul fin. Barred Javelin Fish is the largest of the Javelin Fish and grows to 80cm and over 5kgs. It can be distinguished from the Silver Javelin Fish by spots that on the Barred are arranged in a bar type fashion. Also as the Barred Javelin Fish gets mature it develops a golden, green back.
How To Catch: 
Javelin Fish are caught with typical offshore reef type rigs. Sometimes targeted however often caught by fisherman fishing for other reef fish on inshore reefs and rocky areas. No need for heavy tackle but many are caught on such when fishing for other species, however light tackle say 5-8 kg is fine. Javelin fish will take most baits including, squid, fish baits such as pilchards or prawns.
Where Found: 
Javelin Fish are found in the northern part of Australia from the lower end of the Queensland Coastline to the top of Western Australia. Javelin Fish prefer estuaries and bays. It likes firm or rocky bottoms in the deeper parts of the estuary or bay.
