Description:

The Atlantic Salmon is a highly prized game and food fish native to New England rivers. Atlantic Salmon have a relatively complex life history that includes spawning, juvenile rearing in rivers, and extensive feeding migrations on the high seas. As a result, Atlantic Salmon go through several distinct phases that can be identified by specific changes in behavior, physiology, and habitat requirements.The average size of Atlantic Salmon is 28-30 inches (71-76 cm) long and 8-12 pounds (3.6-5.4 kg) after two years at sea. Although uncommon, adults can grow to be as large as 30 pounds (13.6 kg).

How To Identify:

Atlantic Salmon look similar in body shape to that of the brown trout., however with a slightly slender body and smaller head. It also has a more forked tail and more silvery colouration. Native fish have a dark green or blue green back with silver sides. As it enters the inland waters it turns more bronze colour or dark brown. Landlocked fish (as in Australia) lack the silver colouration of the native fish found overseas. In its native habitat the Atlantic Salmon can grow as large as nearly 30 kgs.

How To Catch:

You should have at least on rod in the following approximate lengths and weights. 8-9 1/2 foot rated for 7-10 weight line. Longer facilitates line control and heavier weights help more in windy conditions. You should also have two floating lines being weight forward or double taper. Your line should match the weight of your fishing rod. For spring fishing you need a slow sink or floating with a sinking tip. Two reels or one with an extra spool with a different line. Recommended are reels with smooth, strong drag systems, and capacity for 150-200 yards or 20 lb. Test backing. It is recommended to use light weight or neoprene stocking foot waders with removable wading shoes for comfort and mobility. Wading shoes have felt soles. Also gravel guards and wader belt. The leader should be 9-12 foot tapered to 4-8 pound test tippet

For live bait you can use garden worm, live minnow, maggots, mudeye, pilchard, scrub worm, shrimp, white bait. When flyfishing it is good to use freshwater streamer, freshwater nymph, freshwater beadhead, freshwater wet, saltwater. For lures try these ones, minnow deep diving, minnow shallow running, sice, spinner blade, spoon, tassie devil style

Internationally

The Atlantic Salmon is native to the northern Atlantic from Connecticut River to Quebec, Iceland and southern Greenland. It also occurs naturally from the Arctic Circle to Portugal. It has been introduced into lakes and rivers worldwide.

Australia

In Australia it has been introduced with limited success in some rivers, lakes and dams in Southern New South Wales. Mainly confined to Monaro, Lake Jindabyne and Thredbo River.
