Description:

Queenfish as they are jointly known by most anglers are actually a leatherskin. There are 4 species in Australia (so far just the two most common listed in myfishingplace). They are a great fighting fish of the Northern half of Australia, although almost solely captured for sport. The Talang or Giant Leatherskin is the largest of the Queenfish (Leatherskins) caught in Australia.

How To Identify:

Queenfish are an oblong shape with a short head. They are extremely laterally compressed (hence the nickname "Skinny", and a very deep forked tail. Queenfish are a dusky green to bluish above, fading to a grey , silvery or white below. The Talang Queenfish has a very large mouth and extends well beyond the eyes, it has 5-8 grey blotches but they are only above the lateral line. Talang Queenfish grow to about 16kgs.

How To Catch:

Queenfish will take a variety of baits and lures. They will take fish baits (live or dead), fish strips, pilchards etc. Very similar to any sort of bait you would fish for other pelagic fish such as Mackerel. However the best (and by far the most fun) way to catch queenfish is via lures. They will take trolled lures such as minnows or spoons, or cast surface poppers (lots of fun!) however they don't seem to be able to resist small white buck tail jigs - retrieved as fast as you can wind!!
