Where found: Giant Herring area found around the top half of Australia, occasionally caught in Northern New South Wales around the top of Australia to around mid Western Australia. Giant Herring mainly inhabit tidal estuaries, bays and saltwater lagoons.

Giant Herring are a nice light tackle sportfish of the bays and estuaries around the top half of Australia

How To Identify:

A long bright silvery fish with a huge, forked tail. Usually greenish blue on the top of the body. It has a single dorsal fin about half way from its head and tail. Its fins are a dusky yellow with tinges of black. It can grow to almost 1.5 meters and weight almost 12 kgs.

How To Catch:

Giant Herring mostly feed on small prawns, crabs and other crusteans. So small prawns, crabs, or fish baits work well. However it is a great ultra light tackle sportfish on flies or small lures. Small poppers are a great when they are feeding on the surface. small white bucktail feather figs also work very well.
